Gastroenterology Fellows Class of 2024!!!
Also known as Debra Yen!!
Debra Yen:
Welcome to this year’s only First Year Fellow Debra Yen! I know, that even prior to arriving in Cincinnati, Debra was adopted by the Second Year Class of Fellows. Debra, we are so happy to have you here.
We were delighted to convince Debra to leave Washington University in St Louis. She is a summa cum laude graduate of that very fine institution and then selected Washington University for Medical School and Barnes-Jewish Hospital for her Residency in Internal Medicine. Prior to starting her GI Fellowship, she did a year as a hospitalist. She and her husband then participated in the Couples Match. Her husband is entering his Cardiology Fellowship here at UC.
Debra excels at all that she does. She is AOA and received the Mentors in Medicine Research Award. She told me in our interview that “when she finds something she is passionate about; she grabs hold and dedicates herself to it”. I loved her enthusiasm and her commitment to GI/Hepatology. She was a “must have” for our Fellowship.
Despite her outstanding academic achievements, she is humble and down to earth. She uses her quiet nature as a strength and she is a superb listener. She is motivated, brilliant, curious and driven both as a caring clinician and as an academician.
Even at this early stage in her professional development, Debra is drawn to Hepatology. Her personal statement tells a story of a medical school lecturer who said,” I think that if you specialize in an organ, you should be able to eat it”. She said that at that time she was sure of one thing, “I hated the taste of liver, so I thought I could rule that specialty out”. Fast forward to today when she considers herself a budding Hepatologist.
Debra, you embody all the traits we look for in a fellow. You are motivated to care for patients above all else, and to dedicate yourself to the advancement of knowledge and scientific research. We have a strong commitment to your education and to helping you reach your professional goals.
As your Fellowship begins, open your heart and your mind to all our specialty has to offer. Enjoy your hard work and all the rewards that will follow.
WELCOME!
